Head, Technical Services
The University of Manitoba Libraries invites applications for a full-time probationary position at the rank of Associate Librarian for the position of Head, Technical Services. This position requires an experienced, innovative, future-oriented leader who will creatively leverage technology and staff to address the next generation of library technologies particularly as applied to discovery and access tools, integrated library systems, acquisition and cataloguing of materials, and electronic resources management.
Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections, the Head of Technical Services is expected to take a leadership role in aligning the workflow and services of the unit with the strategic initiatives of the Libraries. Oversees the acquisition, integration and life cycle management of resources and metadata and the supporting processes that enable knowledge access through a suite of discovery and retrieval systems. The unit collaborates with consortial partners, including COPPUL and CRKN and its cataloguing outsourcer, OCLC. The Head represents the Libraries’ technical service interests regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Qualifications: A Master of Library Science or its equivalent from an ALA accredited library school is required; an advanced academic degree preferred; plus a minimum of 5 years of recent library technical services experience, including progressively responsible supervisory and management experience; extensive knowledge and understanding of best practices, current issues, and trends in technical services including metadata and authority control; knowledge and understanding of how new technologies are changing methods of resources delivery and scholarly communication; knowledge of and experience with bibliographic utilities and integrated automated library systems; knowledge of cataloguing principles and practices including classification systems, subject analysis, AACR2 and MARC21, as well as general knowledge of RDA; evidence of successful collaboration with external vendors; knowledge and experience with publishers and vendors of scholarly research materials and with procuring resources in a consortial environment; demonstrated financial, analytical, quantitative, planning and organizational skills; evidence of ability to motivate and develop staff, resolve conflict and manage change; demonstrated commitment to user-focused services and working collaboratively with a wide range of groups and individuals in a team environment; excellent written and verbal communications skills; evidence of excellent interpersonal, communication, and group management skills; ability to work independently and exercise individual initiative; evidence of innovation using emerging information technologies; evidence of success as a change agent. A record of research and publication commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate Librarian is required. Experience with project management is preferred.

The University of Manitoba Libraries (http://www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/) consists of nine unit libraries and twelve satellite information centres located on the Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses and at eight Winnipeg hospitals. With collections of over 2 million volumes, an annual operating budget of over 24 million dollars and a staff of approximately 275 employees, the Libraries serves a community of approximately 38,000 students, faculty and citizen borrowers.
Technical Services is responsible for acquisitions, cataloguing, and electronic resources for the University of Manitoba Libraries . The unit oversees the acquisition, integration and life cycle management of resources and metadata and the supporting processes that enable knowledge access through a suite of discovery and retrieval systems. The unit annually manages acquisitions of books, serials, and electronic resources worth $9M. The unit provides original and derived cataloguing for non-outsourced materials and handles withdrawals, transfers and replacements of book and serial volumes. The unit collaborates with consortial partners, including COPPUL and CRKN and its cataloguing outsourcer, OCLC. The unit is staffed by 4 librarians and 28 support staff and reports to the Associate Director for Collections.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This position normally has a two-year probationary period.
Librarians enjoy academic status and are appointed to one of four ranks: General, Assistant, Associate and Librarian, with possibility of promotion.
